Some of the dentists who decide to delve into research or teach on a full-time basis must study for two or four years more in a dental program that is advanced.

A tooth doctor must be in possession of a working license from their state. These requirements differ from state to state, so it is important that they know the regulations. Also, a dental surgeon should be in possession of a degree from an accredited school, and it is a requirement that he must have passed the National Board Dental Examination. Any tooth doctor who wants to start a private practice should have a license for the field he/she will specialize in.
