Different Types Of Dental Anesthesia

By Deborah Ross

The biggest problem most dental surgery patients confront is not the pain, but the anxiety. Some people avoid paying a visit to their dentist thanks to their irrational fear, but that's something that can be easily solved today. Combining painkillers and anti anxiety medications is the best method for helping patients when it comes to such problems. Different dental anesthesia combinations will make such surgical procedures less uncomfortable.

The most common type of medicine used for local anesthesia is Novocain. This medicine is typically administered as an injection directly into the surgical area. Novocaine numbs the entire area really effectively, temporarily preventing the teeth nerve fibers from transmitting impulses to your brain. That's why the patients feel no pain at all during their procedures, and Novocain alone can be used really effectively.

Used alone, this drug is perfectly able to eliminate the pain completely. But, the pain is only one part of this problem. Most patients also experience a high level of anxiety, and that's make their procedures even more uncomfortable. Most dentist combine Novocain with different other drugs, for the purpose of making their patients feel more relaxed. Typically used methods are different oral medications, i. V. Sedation and nitrous oxide, or laughing gas.

When it comes to various orally taken medications, the most popular ones are probably Ativan and Valium. They should be taken up to one hour prior to surgical procedure. Thanks to the fact these drugs might have various side effects, someone has to be there with such patients to bring them home safely after everything is done. Dizziness is quite common side effect, for example.

Which anti anxiety method will your dentist prescribe depends on your personal anxiety level. Orally taken drugs have moderate effect, and, combined with previously mentioned pain killer called Novocain, could be quite enough for majority of patients. They aren't expensive, they are easy to use and they provide sufficient level of relaxation, making it all more comfortable.

Nitrous oxide, or so called laughing gas is another commonly used relaxant. It is administered by breathing through the nasal mask after receiving the Novocain. The effect of this particular relaxant depends on the quantity of inhaled gas. It's usually up to the patient to inhale as much as it is needed. This method is the lightest anti-anxiety method and it doesn't cause any hangover effects whatsoever.

When it comes to patients suffering from higher anxiety levels, lighter methods might not be enough. In this case, i. V. Sedation might be better solution. It will make them far more relaxed, comparing to other commonly used methods previously mentioned. In some cases, this is probably the best solution.

Twilight sleep or I. V. Sedation is the most expensive method, but also the most effective one. It makes the patient completely unaware of the procedure, although they will remain awake during it. It will also cause so called hangover effect, and such patients must have an escort to come home safely. These effects might remain there for some time, and this must be taken into consideration as well.
