Dry Skin Treatment: Some Natural, Easy Remedies

By Melissa Allen

Weather conditions can contribute to the dryness of skin but harsh soaps, chemicals, lack of fluids, course fabrics and long, hot showers can all have a part to play too. When it is very dry it can become sensitive and start to crack, flake and itch. This can be uncomfortable and dry skin treatment becomes necessary. It is worth considering some natural remedies before you go to any great expense.

The dryness may be genetic or it may be due to bad habits, but either way, there are ways to make it feel hydrated and smooth again. Olive oil is an ingredient that makes a good cleanser and moisturizer. Rub it in and then place a warm, damp cloth over it until it cools. It will clean without stripping away the natural oils.

Exfoliating may be considered too harsh to attempt when suffering from dryness. However, the dry cells have to go. A gentle exfoliating mask such as one made of oatmeal and honey will help to sooth and hydrate at the same time. Once the dead cells are removed, new ones can replace them.

Coconut oil is a good topical treatment that's readily available and completely natural. The oil is absorbed slowly when rubbed and helps to replenish moisture. It is full of healthy fatty acids that replace what may have been lost.

Flaxseed oil is a great addition to the diet which helps to make sure the body is well hydrated. This is because it is a valuable source of omega-3 which helps to hydrate the body. A teaspoon of the oil or a capsule can be taken every day. It is probably better to use the oil as it is absorbed more easily.

The mild acids contained in apple cider vinegar are also great for dryness, helping with pH level and restoring oil production balance. It also contains plenty of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Water and honey can be added in equal portions to the apple cider vinegar to make it even more effective. Pimples and age spots respond well to a dab of the vinegar left on overnight.

A homemade avocado mask can be very soothing. Puree half an avocado and mix it with a teaspoon of olive oil for the best effect. Apply to the face and leave on for about 20 minutes before washing off. Avocados are a great source of antioxidants that fight free radicals. They supply protection from environmental damage that can lead to aging. A surprising fact is that it also contains a good amount of vitamin C which is needed to create collagen.

This may seem obvious but it really helps to drink more water, with the suggested amount being eight glasses a day. Try to drink water instead of coffee which is a diuretic. Alcohol too, makes the body lose fluids. Create a habit of drinking water and help to hydrate your whole body and moisturize from the inside out. Without adequate water intake, wrinkles and pores are more prominent because the water helps to plump up the cells and flush out impurities. Not everyone will agree that drinking water creates such a difference but there are many others who swear that this habit has taken years off their faces.
