By Dennis Ross

Often life is full of twists and turns that are unforeseen. While some may reveal an unexpected surprise, other may require a course of action in order for a resolution to take place. Some are due to choices and when choices result in new life, the first step is to talk to someone that works at a legal paternity testing office.

With casual relationships becoming more common in most cultures, a man needs to know if he has become a father. Back in the days, married and unmarried couples often acted in good faith if the woman become pregnant under unusual circumstances. Even if there was proof that the child was part of a different gene pool, it was normal for families to remain intact.

While sex and cultural attitudes have shifted over the years, court systems have changed according to protect the rights of those involved. Even though the average person may find the freedom liberating there is also the outcome to consider when partners do not practice monogamy. The risks can be high and uncomfortable when a person is not armed with the facts about their parental responsibilities.

A long time ago, when only the man in family went to work, there were few laws to protect children born outside of a marriage. Blood tests back then gave limited information but were sometimes enough for a judge to grant a paternity claim. However, DNA testing gives a lot more information and has a higher rate of accuracy. Choosing a reputable service is the best way for both parties to get the resolve they need.

These tests usually stand up in a court and are used in a child support case. When paternity is established, the biological father is ordered to pay until adulthood. Some courts may extend payments if the child chooses to attend school or has an obstacle that prevents them from living a productive life, such as an illness. Should the father miss court mandated payment, they are also responsible for retroactive payments until caught up.

Even if the mother is unable to contact the birth father, it is recommended to use DNA testing for the health of the child. Sometimes, there may be a mystery ailment or other health disorder that can affect their quality of life. An official DNA record can be essential in a health practitioner finding the right cure, as opposed to assumption or speculation.

By taking a DNA test, the man can save money and heartache. Unfortunately, there women who may claim that a man has fathered her child but may have an ulterior motive, such as money. This happens to celebrities and sports figures sometimes but even someone who is not wealthy can find themselves a victim. Only because they are named as the father on a birth certificate, their paycheck can be garnished with little notice in some states.

Most importantly, children are entitled to know their family history. The genetic pool can have a strong impact on the life choices they make as they grow into adulthood. For instance, their biological father may have a family history of chronic ailments, like high blood pressure or obesity, that affect dietary choices. The same may apply to any mental problems the child may have later on. By having this information, a health care professional can determine whether treatment is needed or if a future event can be prevented.
