Using Self Tanning Products To Ensure A Safe And Inexpensive Tan For The Beach

By Haywood Hunter

Years ago it was common to get a sun tan by lying in the sun. Today medical advances have taught people that this can be harmful. Now people get the same results by using self tanning products.

Ultraviolet rays come directly from the sun; it would seem that this would be a good thing and it is, as long as you protect your skin. In fact, ultraviolet is necessary in small doses as it provides the best source of vitamin D. The problem is that too much sun can cause the skin to burn and eventually lead to skin cancer.

Many people think that a tan makes them much more attractive. The glow makes skin look fresh and young. The problem is that science has proven that ultraviolet rays can damage your fragile skin. Tanning beds are not the solution because they also use ultraviolet rays. The best way to get a great tan and stay healthy is to use self tanning products.

There are many different kinds of self tanning products that you apply at home; creams, lotions, towelettes, and milk. They all work by the same basic chemical reaction; the DHA in the self tanning products reacts with the amino acids in skin to turn the it brown. This process usually only takes a few hours but it can last anywhere from three to seven days.

Self tanning products do not work properly unless you apply it carefully. The first step is skin exfoliation, which should be done several hours before application of the self tanning products. Then dry the skin before application. Once you have put on your latex gloves then you can begin applying the self tanning products to the entire surface of the skin. Remember to wash your hands after you are done so that too much product is not left behind. A sweep of your skin with a hair dryer will help it to set properly.

Some people prefer to get their tan in a spray booth. It is easier than applying product but also more expensive. The salon will sometimes come to your house or you can go to the salon. Then they use a paint sprayer to apply the DHA product. Tans from this process last the same amount of time as self application.

The first type of self tanning products that were released often turned the skin orange and had a strong smell. Using cheap self tanning products, or overdoing the application, can still cause these problems. However, if you use the higher end self tanning products this should not happen.

For many people cost is the determining factor in choosing self tanning products. A lotion or mousse can cost from $5 to $50 but this is one product that is worth the higher price. Spray tans are the most expensive and can be anywhere from $25 to $50 a session.

Using self tanning products is the best way to ensure you look great but that your skin will still be healthy. You can find them in many varieties including lotions, mousse, and even spray tans. The only decision now is where to be seen in your beautiful new skin.
