Keeping Osteoporosis At Bay Via Hormone Replacement Therapy

By Patricia Wagner

Osteoporosis is a medical condition that is characterized by the weakening of the bones. Needless to say, it is something that can increase one's risk of having a fracture. Anyone may end up suffering from osteoporosis in the future. However, health authorities confirm that women have a higher chance of developing it primarily due to menopause. The good news is there's hormone replacement therapy or HRT that can help lower a woman's odds of ending up with the problem.

Estrogen is a female hormone that is keeping bone weakening at bay. Actually, it's just one of the many tasks that are carried out by the said chemical. For as long as there's sufficient amounts of estrogen around, women need not worry that much about suffering from osteoporosis.

Sadly, the levels of estrogen suddenly drop during the menopausal stage. This is exactly the reason why menopause is regarded as a major risk factor for osteoporosis. Such is also the reason why the dreaded bone condition is more commonly seen in women than in men who won't end up with osteoporosis.

Having a fracture as a result of osteoporosis can considerably decrease the quality of life of a woman. Its presence can keep her from carrying out activities that add lots of meaning and happiness to life. In fact, performing everyday physical tasks can prove to be a massive problem if a fracture is around. Hip fracture is very much likely to happen, and it requires undergoing surgical treatment that is not only expensive but also very risky.

HRT can help save women from encountering osteoporosis and the various problems that may stem from it. Such is perfect most especially for those who may wind up with the serious bone disease because of various other reasons. Aside from osteoporosis, HRT is known to effectively address the many other issues associated with menopause due to the fact that it encourages restored balance of the female hormones.

HRT is very good at managing one of the most pestering menopause-related issues, and that's none other than hot flashes. It can be a very big problem at night as it's the root cause of night sweats that can keep women from getting some sleep. HRT can also address appetite changes, unwanted weight gain, mood swings and hair loss due to menopause.

Sadly, just like with any other therapies out there, a few risks are associated with HRT. It's for this reason why it is contraindicated for some menopausal women. For instance, it is not recommended for those who are at high risk of having breast cancer. It's also not intended for women who have heart disease or may develop it.

It's a good thing that undergoing HRT is not the only way to keep at bay menopause-related osteoporosis. Regularly consuming foods that are packed with vitamin D and calcium may be done. Women should make it a habit to exercise on a regular basis. In order to fend off the bone disease effectively, cigarette smoking and excessive alcohol intake should be avoided at all costs.
