Most of the commonly used terms in colorectal cancer are the local excision, laparoscopic surgery, polypectomy, and resection. The polypectomy is one procedure in which the polyps, small growths in the colons lining are being removed in performing colonoscopy. A colonoscopy is a procedure that will use colonoscope and are inserted into a rectum to view rectum and colon.

The procedure of local excision will be utilized for the treatment of cancers in rectum. This is done to remove the cancers and the tissues from rectum walls. This method may be performed through the anus or through a small cut in rectums. Local excision does not need to do major operations in the abdomen. Resection is a method done to remove some colon parts along with the cancers and tissues attached.

The laparoscopic surgery is a process on performing a laparoscopy, meaning, to look inside on the cavities of abdominal parts with the use of special types of cameras or scopes. An incision is being performed in an abdomen and those laparoscopic instruments are being inserted through small incisions. All pictures of the intestinal organs are being transmitted into the video monitor to be seen by the surgeon.

The other four procedures for colorectal cancer surgery are stomas or ostomies, fecal diversion, K pouch, and J pouch. Stomas are the opening of some parts of bowel to the skin. Permanent stomas are being made if stool cannot pass into the normal route even after the surgery. While the temporary stomas are being made for keeping the stool away from the areas that are operated.

Fecal diversion is one procedure in which ileostomy or the opening of parts between skin and the small intestine is being made. Colostomy or the opening of parts between skin and the colon is also done. Usually, a fecal diversion is utilized for temporary measure, allowing chronic inflammation, infection, and surgery healing.

The attached K pouch to anus allows the person in doing a similar way when going to a bathroom. It provides a reservoir for stools and adds a nipple valve for preventing the stools in leaking. K pouch is not often performed by most surgeons because of complexity in the surgery.

The J pouch is made in the end of a small intestine in order to provide a place of stool before a person will go to a bathroom for the proctocolectomy. Many forms are under the ileal pouches. The J pouch is the very common form of ileal pouch.
