Concussion Recovery, Symptoms And Lasting Effects

By Joyce Cole

There are many ways in which children and adults can acquire a concussion. Most often, it is due to a major or minor injury to the head. While concussion recovery and treatment are often different between children and adults, anyone suspecting a concussion is present needs to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

While football has been hit hard with claims that the sport is unsafe for middle and high school students, it is still an avid way of life. Whether a professional football player or those playing in junior leagues, all are at risk for concussions during practice or when playing against an opposing team. In fact, one of the most widely discussed risks related to the sport are concussions which often effect more than 250,000 athletes each year in America alone.

Short term changes in routines and regular activities can also benefit recovery when it comes to healing from such an event. Since most middle aged people work either at, or away from home, taking a week or two off can often assure getting back to regular activities and any ongoing routine as quickly as possible.

Although, if symptoms worsen, the child should cut back on the activity which prompted the return of symptoms. While this is the case, it is important to remember that each child and concussion is different. As such, recovery needs to be customized based on the specific symptoms a child is experiencing at the time.

There can be a number of factors which can postpone healing. In addition, if an individual has multiple concussions whether a major and minor, two major or two minor concussions, the recovery period can often be twice as long as someone with only a single concussion. Any individual whether having a single or multiple concussions needs to avoid brain teasers, puzzles and other activities which require a great deal of thought.

In most cases, after experiencing such a blow to the head, the brain temporarily goes through several metabolic changes which can impair various bodily functions. With more sophisticated imaging such as CTs and MRIs now available, radiologists can now see if nerve fibers which connect to the brain were also effected. As such, up until recently, it was hard for doctors and surgeons to determine whether or not there would be lasting brain damage or neurological issues from such injuries.

Anyone recovering from such an event, whether a child or adult, needs also avoid any sudden movements. For example, avoiding amusement park rides which can often climb, jerk and twist need be avoided at all cost. For, rises in blood pressure can also effect concussions, and at times, cause complications. As such, it is also important to avoid horror movies, psychological thrillers and other activities in which any type of fear factor may be present.

In most cases, the most serious complications an individual can receive from a concussion is death. While this is the case, fatalities from a concussion are often rare. While most often, those with multiple concussions often experience difficulty concentrating, completing tasks, dizziness and headaches. Whether multiple concussions are major, minor or a combination, these symptoms have been known to linger for months while some can last more than a year.
