Most people usually believe that chiropractors do not have any form of academic qualifications, but that is very wrong. Chiropractors typically complete 8 years of post-secondary education before becoming licensed and working with clients from the public. However, many of them usually have 4 years if higher education, with only a few advancing beyond that point of academic qualification. The 4 years of post-secondary education usually entails over 4, 200 hours of instructional hours.

Depending on the year, training in a graduate program is normally divided into four parts. Students then cover different courses every year whereby each year is an advanced continuation of the coursework of the previous year. In the first year, learners cover courses in biochemistry, spinal anatomy, chiropractic principles, and general anatomy. In second year, they cover courses in, imaging interpretation, pathology research methods, chiropractic procedures and clinical orthopedics.

In the third year of training, learners normally go for internship in any appropriate establishment to improve their chiropractic skills. There, they find an opportunity to apply their skills and gain required experience. During that same year, they do courses in, ethics and jurisprudence, pediatrics, practice management, and integrated chiropractic dermatology. Lastly, the final year of the four years of study focus for a second time on clinical internship.

During internship when students are in their fourth year, they work under the close supervision of an accomplished chiropractor. Students have to complete rotations in a hospital setting or a veteran clinic. One is cleared to graduate after they complete this internship and clinical rotations. They may also choose to advance their education by joining another program for a masters degree. However, like stated earlier, most of them choose to look for employment at this point.

It is vital for a chiropractor to receive licensure before engaging with patients. Licenses are usually awarded by a specialized board in the state under consideration. This board also offers certification. A variety of fields including acupuncture, sports medicine, nutrition, and rehabilitation among others have certifications available for chiropractors to pursue. After being certified, one is given the title of doctor of chiropractic.

Given the kind of training and certification that chiropractors go through, it is safe to say that they are as qualified as any practitioner in the field of medicine. According to the American Chiropractic Association, chiropractic training is as thorough as that of medical doctors. In fact, the two fields involve the same number of classroom hours.

These professionals are qualified to treat a wide range of medical conditions. Some of the conditions that they treat include lower back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints, headaches, and whiplash-related conditions. They also gain more experience as they continue to work in this field.
