The Different Procedures Of Cosmetic Dentistry Jacksonville FL

By Sarah Turner

Over a period of time, cosmetic dentistry is gaining popularity. The procedures involved usually range from shaping and whitening of teeth to replacement of teeth. There are a wide range of tools and techniques that dentists use. Before going for a cosmetic procedure, one needs to be well versed with all the possible risks. When considering procedures of cosmetic dentistry Jacksonville FL residents will need to know the various options available.

One of the most common procedures is teeth whitening. After a while, teeth could get discolored. This is mostly the case for people that smoke or take certain medications. There are also foods and beverages that lead to discoloration. Using a chemical process, dentists are able to bleach teeth. This is done either as an in-office procedure or they could also provide a system that can be used from home. In such cases, the person is instructed on how to go about the procedure.

Bonding is usually done for improving appearance of teeth which have spaces between them. The same will apply to teeth which are stained, broken or chipped. It is also possible to use bonding materials for filling small cavities within teeth or to protect teeth that are exposed. It is a procedure that can be accomplished from one office visit using etching solution. This will then be followed by the application of tooth colored materials to surface of teeth.

Yet another procedure involved in cosmetic dentistry is veneers. These are custom shells made from porcelain or plastic. They get to cover sides of the affected tooth so that shape or color is changed. Veneers are longer lasting compared to bonding and have a superior appearance. Before they are inserted, an impression of affected teeth is taken. After that, there is buffing of teeth before having the veneer cemented in place.

With veneers, beams of light are used to harden the cement which is used. This secures veneers to the teeth. When it comes to porcelain veneers, they usually are made from a laboratory and therefore one will need to schedule a second visit for them to be inserted.

Crowns are also known as caps. They cover a tooth in order to restore normal appearance and shape. Crowns are used for among other things protection of week teeth, covering discolored teeth, holding dental bridges and covering dental implants. They are made from resin, metal or ceramic materials. Owing to the fact that they are expensive, dentists will only recommend them when other procedures are not able to produce desired results.

Enamel shaping and contouring is another option. It involves removing or contouring of dental enamel so that appearance of teeth is improved. The process can be used together with bonding. It is used to alter length, position or length of teeth. The most ideal candidates for the procedure are people with healthy, normal teeth. Also, there will need to be enough bone between teeth.

Placing implants is involving and expensive. It however is a long term solution to replacing missing teeth. They are also used as alternative to bridges. It is a surgical procedure.
